Cynthia Serota is the director of Birmingham Speech and Hearing Associates, LLC. She is a licensed speech-language pathologist. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Disorders from Auburn University and a Master of Science Degree from James Madison University in Virginia. After working in the public school system for three years, she entered private practice in Birmingham. She has over 30 years of experience with particular emphasis in articulation disorders and language delay in young children. Cynthia is an active member of the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama and is the past vice president of governmental issues. She is licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Cynthia and her husband, Ted, have four children and two dogs. In her spare time she enjoys babysitting five grandchildren, church activities, traveling, reading, and relaxing at the beach with family.
Jill Byrd has worked in the field of audiology for over 19 years. She received a master’s degree in communicative disorders from the University of Florida and a doctorate of audiology from the University of Arizona. She is nationally certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She is a member of the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama. Jill is experienced in complete diagnostic audiological evaluations, aural rehabilitation relevant to hearing loss, hearing aids, and hearing health care. She conducts speechreading and lipreading education and training in addition to consultation and audiological services to area public and private schools for management and monitoring of hearing impaired students. She also conducts hearing healthcare clinics and offers consultations to various retirement and assisted living facilities.
Leslie Crawford joined the staff of Birmingham Speech and Hearing Associates in 2008. For six years prior to this, she was employed at a busy ENT clinic in North Carolina. She received her master’s degree from Auburn University and a doctorate of audiology from the University of Florida. She is nationally certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Leslie is an active member of the Alabama Speech and Hearing Association.
Ferne McClintock has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for 30 years, having received her master’s degree at the University of South Florida in 1983. She worked in the Tampa Bay area and in Santa Cruz, California, serving both children and adults before coming to Birmingham in 1987. She has worked for Birmingham Speech & Hearing Associates for more than 20 years, primarily serving children with articulation, language, stuttering, and voice disorders. Ferne has particular interest in Childhood Apraxia of Speech and in Autism Spectrum Disorders. She currently belongs to the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
Annie Laurie Sinclair is a speech-language pathologist. She has evaluated and treated children with various speech-language disorders for 17 years. She received her bachelor’s and master's degrees in communication disorders from Auburn University. Annie Laurie holds state licensure through the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and belongs to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Taryn Hopper has been a speech Language Pathologist for 15 years. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Communication Science and Disorders from the University of Montevallo. She has worked in the school setting for the past 15 years focusing on preschool through 5th grade aged children with a variety of speech and language needs. She is an active member of the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama and has served on the Executive Board for many years and currently is the Honors Chair. She is licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association, where she holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence. Taryn has been married to her husband, Lawson, for 17 years and has three boys, Lawson, Judah and Finn.
Birmingham Speech and Hearing Associates (BSHA) is fortunate to have three office managers, so depending on when you visit our office, you will be greeted by Christine, Lisa, or Andrea.
Christine has been teaching at Briarwood Christian School for the past 21 years at their half day program and has come to BSHA every afternoon for over seven years. She specializes in our office bookkeeping and insurance procedures.
Lisa joined BSHA three years ago, coming from Hoover City Schools after retiring with 31 years primarily at the high school level as a teacher of the hearing impaired. Besides managing the office, Lisa’s focus is on our social media.
Andrea started working at BSHA almost 10 years ago after retiring with 25 years as a teacher of the hearing impaired with Hoover City Schools. She began working as an office manager a few years after starting with BSHA, and she also coordinates our school screenings.
