Hearing Aids in Birmingham
At Birmingham Speech & Hearing Associates, we believe every patient deserves personalized care based on their hearing loss and their individual needs. That’s why we offer hearing devices from many major hearing aid manufacturers. Because we can choose from such a wide range of products, we’re able to customize our recommendation to you, and you can be confident that any hearing device we suggest is the best fit.
We fit hearing aids from traditional manufacturers including EarQ, Oticon, Starkey, Signia, ReSound, and Phonak. We also offer Lyric devices, which are a convenient and invisible option introduced in recent years. Every hearing aid brand has its own strengths, and the different manufacturers are always coming out with new technology that pushes the rest forward. We love how new evolutions from one company can lead to better products — and better experiences for patients like you — across the board.

The Right Hearing Aids
We aren’t a one-size-fits-all practice. Everything we do is personalized and customized to your needs. And that’s true of our hearing aid recommendations, too. Before we can suggest what hearing aids we think will give you the best results, we consider things like what locations you spend time in, what listening environments you have trouble hearing in, how severe your hearing loss is, what kind of hearing loss you have, and your budget.
We gather this information from our conversations with you as well as the results of your hearing test. We’ll go over your options and explain how each possibility will work in different listening environments. Selecting the right hearing aid is a collaborative effort between our team and you. Ultimately, the choice of whether to move forward with hearing aids or not is yours.
Types of Hearing Aids
Hearing aids generally can be categorized based on style (shape/size) and technology level. Style does not typically affect the price. Instead, cost is usually determined by the technology level you choose. We offer a wide range of hearing aid styles including completely-in-canal (CIC), invisible-in-canal (IIC), in-the-canal (ITC), in-the-ear (ITE), behind-the-ear (BTE), and receiver-in-canal (RIC).
Our patients often choose the receiver-in-canal model because it’s comfortable, powerful, and offers more features. RIC hearing aids come in rechargeable models and can frequently stream directly from phones or other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Custom-fit hearing aids may be more invisible, but generally speaking, you won’t have these advanced features available.

The Oticon More is a new perspective in hearing care. This hearing aid is designed to work more like the brain does because it learned through experience. Using On-board Deep Neural Network (DNN) the Oticon More gives the brain more of the information it needs to make sense of sounds, even in the most complex listening environments. Research has proven that the brain needs access to all sounds – not just speech – in order to function in a natural way. Using MoreSound Intelligence, Oticon More delivers 30% more sound to the brain, making speech and other sounds clearer*.
With the Oticon More you will be able to enjoy, follow, and engage in conversations easier than before. You won’t have to strain to hear anymore, the Oticon More will do all the work while providing you with crystal clear sound. Lyric Hearing Aids
Lyric hearing aids are unlike any other hearing aid on the market. These are a completely invisible, hassle-free option that we place directly in your ear canal. For two months at a time, you can forget your Lyric hearing aids are even in your ears because you won’t have to take them out to clean them or change a battery. At the end of that two months, you will come back to our office and we’ll replace your hearing aids with another set. Birmingham Speech & Hearing Associates is the only Premiere Lyric provider in the Birmingham area. Lyric hearing aids aren’t suitable for every hearing loss, but many people have found them to be a life-changer.

Technology Levels
Hearing aids are available in a variety of technology levels, all depending on what you need your hearing aids to do. In general, more expensive hearing aids perform better in noisy environments, while less expensive hearing aids are most suited for calm, quiet environments. Where you spend your time and where you have the most trouble hearing are key factors when deciding what level of technology will benefit you.
- Premium technology is good in just about any environment. It's the best choice for patients who lead very active lives and who enjoy having technology at their fingertips.
- Advanced technology is great for places like church, where you're hearing at a distance. It is also suitable for the occasional crowded restaurant.
- Standard technology is a good fit for patients whose everyday lives include mostly get-togethers with family and friends and one-on-one conversations in quieter spaces.
